Blog #3 Jackie Cialone

The distinction between a public versus the public is important to know. A public can be any group or audience but the public is inclusive to everyone. The problem is that a public can perceive themselves as the public. This caused gender inequality. Woman were not able to speak publicly. If a woman did give a speech publicly, she would no longer be seen as “pure”. Historically, men were the superior to women; women did not have equal rights.

Women were not allowed to speak in front of a “promiscuous audience”. A promiscuous audience is an audience of both men and women. But looking at the definition of “promiscuous” today, the term now has a different meaning. Over time the word promiscuous became a term used for “the morality and sexuality of women”. This shows how difficult it was for women to have a platform for their voices to be heard. They were not allowed to speak in front of a promiscuous audience and if they did they were no longer seen as “pure”, hence the term “promiscuous”.

In today’s society I think women have more of a voice that is actually heard. Women still do not have the same equal rights men do but I would say that compared to the past, today’s society is not as “gendered”. Woman have the ability to speak out and stand up for what they believe in without as much backlash as they would’ve received in the past. I think that in today’s society we are making progress to get to un-gendered public space where anyone can have their voice heard.
