The ways that public space gendered historically according to the readings is females became more involved. Women historically let men be superior over them but the counterpublic came and women wanted equal rights. Public comes through interacts, just people being them and as a group, regular people but the counterpublic is people who go against those people or against the status quo or what is suppose to happen.
Men didn't typically let women interact or take lead especially in the public but with this counterpublic that'll allow them to fight back. Back then women listened to men and followed rules about letting a man lead, but today women want equality; equal rights and equal pay. The public historically was people who followed their superior and that is growing away now. The public whether men and/or women is starting to also become the counterpublic and have their own beliefs aside from just believing in what the superior man over them told them to believe.
I think it is because there is still feminism and men fighting against feminists. There is people rallying for a women president while others are tearing down that idea, gendering will take place as long as people that are superior to us keeps letting this happen and people believe that this is still the 1800s and only men are superior, women can be too now, they have the right to be. Women should be getting the same treatment as men. There are men protesting against the women who are protesting for total equality. Gendering is happening in the public today even though women are coming into what people see as "man only" roles.
